John Dowland (1563–1626) fu uno dei più importanti compositori inglesi del tardo Rinascimento. Era rinomato come virtuoso del liuto e per le sue canzoni (chiamate canzoni per liuto), in cui la linea vocale è accompagnata dal liuto. Sebbene sia spesso conosciuto per i suoi brani malinconici, come Flow My Tears, scrisse anche opere vivaci e giocose come Fine Knacks for Ladies.
