Hungarian Dance No. 5 by Johannes Brahms was used in Charlie Chaplin’s film The Great Dictator during the scene where the protagonist barber shaves a customer to music. In Mel Brooks’ Dracula, Dead and It’s Happy, it is used during the dance scene between Count Vlad and Mina. The Hungarian Dances for Piano Four Hands were written by Johannes Brahms at the beginning of his musical career. These had considerable success throughout Europe and were the immediate subject of the most varied transcriptions. In the original score the dances were qualified as Hungarian because at that time the Magyar folklore was completely unknown and confused with the gypsy music that that nomadic people had spread. Hungarian dances are in fact imbued with the rhythm and gypsy melodies freed from the virtuosity that was inserted and invented by the performers. Ultimately we cannot speak of Brahmsian compositions but rather of adaptations by the author of gypsy music who, by eliminating the virtuosic parts, recovers the original rhythmic and melodic part. From a formal point of view, the dance has a tripartite form: a first theme is presented, followed by a second one that contrasts with the first in terms of expression and rhythm. Each composition is concluded by the reprise of the first movement performed in a varied way.

Danza Húngara No. 5 de Joannes Brahms se utilizó en la película de Charlie Chaplin El gran dictador durante la escena en la que el peluquero protagonista afeita a un cliente al ritmo de la música. En Dracula, Dead and It’s Happy de Mel Brooks, se usa durante la escena de baile entre el Conde Vlad y Mina. Las Danzas húngaras para piano a cuatro manos fueron escritas por Johannes Brahms al comienzo de su carrera musical. Éstos tuvieron un éxito considerable en toda Europa y fueron objeto inmediato de las más variadas transcripciones. En la partitura original los bailes se calificaban de húngaros porque en aquella época el folclore magiar era completamente desconocido y se confundía con la música gitana que había difundido ese pueblo nómada. Las danzas húngaras están, de hecho, imbuidas del ritmo y las melodías gitanas liberadas del virtuosismo que fue insertado e inventado por los intérpretes. En definitiva no podemos hablar de composiciones brahmsianas sino de adaptaciones del autor de música gitana que, eliminando las partes virtuosas, recupera la parte rítmica y melódica original. Desde un punto de vista formal, la danza tiene una forma tripartita: se presenta un primer tema, seguido de un segundo que contrasta con el primero en cuanto a expresión y ritmo. Cada composición concluye con la repetición del primer movimiento interpretado de forma variada.

Nel film di Mel Brooks Dracula morto e contento, è utilizzata durante la scena del ballo tra il conte Vlad e Mina. Le Danze Ungheresi per pianoforte a quattro mani sono state scritte da Johannes Brahms agli inizi della sua carriera musicale. Queste ebbero in tutta Europa un notevole successo e furono immediato oggetto delle più svariate trascrizioni. Nella partitura orginale le danze venivano qualificate come ungheresi perché in quel tempo il folclore magiaro era del tutto sconosciuto e confuso con la musica zigana che quel popolo nomade aveva diffuso. Le danze ungheresi sono infatti impregnate del ritmo e delle melodie zigane affrancate dal virtuosismo che veniva inserito ed inventato dagli esecutori. Non possiamo in definitiva parlare di composizioni brahmsiane ma piuttosto di adattamenti dell’autore di musiche zigane che, eliminandone le parti virtuosistiche, ne recupera la parte ritmica e melodica originaria. Dal punto di vista formale la danza ha una forma tripartita: viene presentato un primo tema a cui ne segue un secondo contrastante con il primo nell’espressione e nel ritmo. Conclude ogni composizione la ripresa del primo movimento svolto in modo variato.
