GREENSLEEVES FOR ME

Greensleeves” is a traditional English folk song. A broadside ballad entitled “A Newe Northen Dittye of ye Ladye Greene Sleves” was recorded by Richard Jones at the London Stationer’s Company in September 1580, and the tune is found in several pieces of the late 16th-century and early 17th-century sources, such as Ballet’s MS Lute Book and Het Luitboek van Thysius, as well as various manuscripts held in the Seeley Historical Library at Cambridge University Greensleeves in terms of formal structure can be categorized into form called romanesca; or its slight variant, the ancient passamezzo; or the ancient passamezzo in its verses and the romanesca in its reprise; or of the Andalusian progression in its verses and of the romanesca or ancient passamezzo in its reprise. The Romanesca originates in Spain and is composed of a sequence of four chords with a simple and repeated bass , which provides the basis for variations and improvisations. There is a pers istant that Greensleeves was composed by Henry VIII for his lover and future queen consort Anne Boleyn. Boleyn is said to have rejected King Henry’s attempts to seduce her and this refusal can be mentioned in the song when the writer’s love “unkindly rejected me”. However, the piece is based on an Italianate style of composition which did not reach England until after Henry’s death, making it more likely to have been Elizabethan in origin. Una ballata di bordata dal nome “A Newe Northen Dittye of ye Ladye Greene Sleves” fu registrata da Richard Jones presso la London Stationer’s Company nel settembre 1580, e la melodia si trova in diversi brani della fine del XVI secolo e fonti dell’inizio del XVII secolo, come il MS Lute Book di Ballet e Het Luitboek van Thysius , oltre a vari manoscritti conservati nella Seeley Historical Library dell’Università di Cambridge. Tuttavia, il pezzo si basa su uno stile di composizione italiano che non raggiunse l’Inghilterra fino alla morte di Henry, rendendolo più probabile che fosse di origine elisabettiana.
