📖 🇬🇧 Santa Lucia is a Neapolitan song, written by Teodoro Cottrau and published as a barcarola in Naples in 1849. Cottrau himself translated it into Italian during the first phase of the Risorgimento, making it the first Neapolitan song translated into Dante’s language.  The verses of the song celebrate the picturesque aspect of the maritime district of Santa Lucia, on the Gulf of Naples, sung by a boatman who invites you to take a ride on his boat, to better enjoy the cool of the evening.  The song immediately became a national success, experiencing a triumph that projected it out of the peninsula and that still preserves it in all the repertoires of Italian music interpreted in the world by the best singers, both lyrical and light.
One of the first versions to be translated outside Italy was that by the British poet Theo Marzials, often credited as the true composer of the piece.  In the United States the first edition in English was that of Thomas Oliphant, published in Baltimore by M. McCaffrey, although the definitive and most widespread version today is the one recorded at the beginning of the twentieth century by the great Neapolitan opera singer Enrico Caruso.  Also overseas, among the artists who have tried the song is Elvis Presley, who in 1965 included it in the album Elvis for Everyone.

In Scandinavian countries Saint Lucia is very famous, and, with a different text, is sung during the feast of Saint Lucia, which in the northern hemisphere, before the Calendar Reform, fell in the darkest period of the year, during  which tradition has it that the saint travels through every city and country to bring gifts and sweets to the children and announce the next advent of the light that takes over the darkness.  The most famous Scandinavian version is certainly the Swedish one, entitled Luciasången or Sankta Lucia, ljusklara hägring.
In Bohemia and Slovakia a translation entitled Krásná je Neapol (Naples is beautiful), engraved by Waldemar Matuška and Karel Gott, is very famous.

Una delle prime versioni a venir tradotta fuori dall’Italia fu quella ad opera del poeta britannico Theo Marzials, spesso accreditato anche come il vero compositore del brano. Negli Stati Uniti la prima edizione in lingua inglese fu quella di Thomas Oliphant, pubblicata a Baltimora da M. McCaffrey, anche se la versione definitiva ed oggi maggiormente diffusa è quella registrata agli inizi del XX secolo dal grande cantante lirico napoletano Enrico Caruso. Sempre oltreoceano fra gli artisti che si sono cimentati col brano c’è Elvis Presley, che nel 1965 la inserì nell’album Elvis for Everyone.

Nei paesi scandinavi Santa Lucia è famosissima, e, con un testo differente, viene intonata durante la festa di santa Lucia, che nell’emisfero nord, prima della Riforma del Calendario, cadevano nel periodo di massimo buio dell’anno, durante il quale la tradizione vuole che la santa viaggi attraverso ogni città e paese per portare doni e dolci ai bambini ed annunciare il prossimo avvento della luce che prende il sopravvento sull’oscurità. La versione più celebre fra quelle scandinave è certamente quella svedese, intitolata Luciasången o Sankta Lucia, ljusklara hägring.
In Boemia e Slovacchia è molto famosa una traduzione intitolata Krásná je Neapol (Napoli è bella), incisa da Waldemar Matuška e Karel Gott.
