Little is known of Tobias Hume’s life. It is assumed that he was born between 1569 and 1575. The date of 1569 is suggested as at the time it was necessary to be 60 years old to be admitted to the Charterhouse in London, a place for army retirees, where he entered in 1629 as a brother poor.

Tobias Hume

Hume was a professional soldier, known for his roughness and perhaps a mercenary, an officer of both the Swedish and Russian armies. Music was his delight. He published two music collections: Musicall Humors (1605) and Captaine Hume’s Poeticall Musicke (1607).

He was certainly a virtuoso of the viola da gamba, against the dominant fashion of the lute. This prompted John Dowland to publish a refusal and refutation of Hume’s ideas. But he was also known as a prankster, mainly because of the comments and illustrations he included in his musical publications.

He was the first known composer to make use of the technique with wood in the collection The First Part of Ayres (1605)

Tablatures and trascription in modern notation
